The delhi oracle

Veronica "Ronnie" Hayward

Dr. Ajay Kumar

Veronica “Ronnie” Hayward, a Los Angeles native and her boyfriend Dr. Ajay Kumar travel to India, his native land, for a month to celebrate their academic achievements. Unbeknownst to Ajay, his father Dr. Raj has arranged for him to meet a potential marriage partner, Ankita “Kitty” Sharma, the daughter of a family friend, Vivek Sharma, a pharmaceutical tycoon in Varanasi. The ploy infuriates Ajay.

Ronnie’s father Philip/Narayananda divorced her mother Diana and abandoned his family over a decade ago and moved to India to pursue his spiritual aspirations. He was never heard of since. His departure jolted Ronnie into adulthood and she became financially independent at a young age by successfully playing the stock market. However, Ronnie has never told Ajay about her father and in turn he has never introduced her to his conservative family.

After an ill-fated encounter with Ajay’s uncle Suresh at the family mansion in Delhi, the couple flee to a nearby guest house where Ronnie meets Om Prakash, a seer billing himself as “The Delhi Oracle” who foresees several challenges ahead.

Both travel to Goa where Ajay and his cousin Mohan are reunited. He invites them to a rave party, where the punch has been spiked with drugs, causing Ronnie to have a seizure. Reaching out for help, both stumble into a large drug transaction between Mohan and the host of the party, a US-born Sadhu renamed Akhanda Giri. After a jungle witch doctor heals Ronnie, she quibbles with Ajay over medical semantics so much so that she decides they should spend a few days apart. Against all odds, Ronnie goes searching for her long lost father while Ajay heads to Varanasi to meet Kitty Sharma in the hope of appeasing his parents.

From Vrindaban to Mayapur Ronnie finds out her father went to the Himalayas to follow his guru Babaji, a sage deemed by legends to be Immortal.

When she rejoins Ajay in Varanasi, he has moved in with the Sharma family. Their encounter at her hotel turns into a shouting match where allusions to third parties are witnessed by many. The next day Ajay wishes to make amends but Ronnie has left without a trace. Ronnie emails her mother and Ajay that she will extend her stay but due to a power cut, the message is unbeknownst to her, never delivered. At the Railway Station in Haridwar, touts steal her cell phone before a renunciate named Brahmari Baba extricates her from harm’s way and invites her to stay with him. He also helps her locate Babaji’s cave where a vision of the holy man exhorts Ronnie to travel south to Mount Arunachala a known pilgrimage destination.

Days after being unable to reach Ronnie, Ajay contacts the Varanasi police worried by her disappearance. When she fails to make their return flight to the US, a criminal investigation ensues and charges are levied against Ajay and Mohan, suspected of being instrumental in Ronnie’s disappearance and allegedly linked to an Ecstasy manufacturing ring operating in Goa out of Macau and with ties to the Russian and Chinese mafias.

At Mount Arunachala, Ronnie accidentally falls down a ravine, breaks her wrist, cracks her clavicle and severely injures her ankle. A Sadhu named Bhole Baba who lives in an undisclosed cave nearby rescues her and over several weeks nurses her to recovery by natural means.

Before leaving, Ronnie’s host invites his guru Babaji who shows up with Om Prakash, The Delhi Oracle himself and a woman named Sri Devi Maa. The three will greatly influence Ronnie

Back in the US, Ajay’s parents enlist Ronnie’s mother, Diana, to go to India their son to help clear his name and find her daughter. Reconciled with his uncle Suresh Ajay and Diana base out of the family mansion in Delhi.

The Kumars have hired a private investigator, Mac,  to help their lawyer who will defend Ajay, Mohan and his contacts Akhanda Giri and his wife Gita against the charges they are facing. A press conference is  set up at the home of a high-ranking American diplomat in Delhi.

Ronnie and Om Prakash follow Sri Devi Maa, a devotee of Babaji, to a festival in the Himalayas where Ronnie  sees a man she suspects might be her father. Before she can make contact, local law enforcement, aware of her being reported missing, recognize her and take her away.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Yadav, who is in charge of her case, sees to her safe return to Delhi. Her deposition as a witness in the drug event that occurred in Goa further incriminates Mohan and his contacts, solidifying the prosecution’s case.

In Russia, Gita’s father agrees to pay off the mafia in exchange for his daughter’s freedom from their grip while Yuri Krakov, a Russian strong-arm man is sent to intimidate Mohan, commanding his silence, or else. Dejected, Mohan begins using heroin.

In Delhi, Ronnie is reunited with her mother and Ajay. She and Om Prakash will go to Rajasthan to a spiritual gathering that her father will most likely attend. Ronnie entices her mother to visit Jaipur in the meantime and one evening, Suresh shows up unexpectedly and invites Diana to dinner. Hence, a budding romance develops.

In a secluded forest, Ronnie and Om Prakash meet up with Babaji and Sri Devi Maa to witness a great yogi demonstrate the state of Samadhi, a biostatic state of suspended animation, when he is buried alive for seven days. There, Ronnie is finally reunited with her father Narayananda who, due to an intense rejuvenation cure, does not look a day older than when he left his family years ago. It is a deeply emotional reunion for both.

Aware of Narayananda’s likely presence and following Suresh’s advice, Diana elects to join Ronnie at the Samadhi festival. There, in meeting her ex-husband, she finally finds closure.

Sri Devi Maa asks Ronnie if she would be interested in working with her and help with the different aspects of her philanthropic mission but Ronnie declines because the timing is not right.

When Mohan’s case is continued, he goes to the police and offers to wear a wire to extricate evidence for the prosecution against Akhanda Giri and Gita in exchange for clemency. He gathers the information during a visit to his unsuspecting associated the Schiffenbauers. On the eve of getting his freedom, Mohan accidentally overdoses and dies in his own bed at home. All close to him are devastated. The funeral is conducted in the Hindu tradition and Mohan is cremated.

During the mourning period, Dr. Raj invites his brother to visit California. Suresh reveals the depth of his feelings to Diana who is also smitten. Suresh candidly admits to Diana his previous misconduct towards Ronnie, diffusing the matter and opening the way for their relationship to flourish.

Ajay asks Kitty to travel back to the US with him to see if there might be a future for them and she accepts with her father’s blessing. Suresh and Diana grow closer and along with Ronnie they agree to fly back to the US together.

What their futures hold will be revealed in their next adventure:
